Day In The Life Of A Solicitor Apprentice

As a solicitor apprentice, every day is a chance to expand my knowledge, hone my skills and gain valuable experience in the legal world. Whether I'm supporting client meetings or crafting legal documents, I know that attention to detail and professionalism are essential to success. In this blog post, let's dive into what a typical day looks like for a solicitor apprentice.

8:30 am – Arriving at the Office

Most solicitor apprentices work regular office hours, so the day typically starts with arriving at the office around 8:30 am. Of course, this will vary depending on what the plan is for the day, but I find it helpful to get in early, sometimes to do some university work before I begin work for the day. I might have some breakfast or a drink for the morning.

9:30 am – Meeting with a Senior Solicitor

Learning from experienced solicitors is a crucial part of my role as a solicitor apprentice. I might have a meeting scheduled with a senior solicitor or partner who will provide guidance on my tasks for week day. Depending on our work dynamic, I may have frequent meetings with my supervisor or seek guidance on an as-needed basis. During our meeting, I can ask questions, seek clarification, and receive feedback on my previous work, which helps me to continuously improve and grow as a legal professional.

10:00 am – Researching a Matter

As an apprentice I may be tasked with conducting research on a legal matter for a client. This involves reviewing relevant case law, statutes and regulations. I must carefully consider the client's needs and provide accurate and relevant information to support the legal case. This would also be discussed with my supervisor.

12:00 pm – Lunch Break

Like any other professional, solicitor apprentices need a lunch break to recharge and refuel! Many firms offer a cafeteria or nearby restaurants where apprentices can grab a quick lunch or socialise with colleagues.

1:00 pm – Drafting Legal Documents

After lunch, I may be tasked with drafting legal documents, such as research or attendance notes. This requires a high level of attention to detail, and it’s a great way to improve your drafting skills. One thing I’m learning is that a draft can always be improved!

3:00 pm – Meeting with a Client

I may accompany a senior solicitor to meet with a client. During the meeting, the apprentice will take notes and assist with any follow-up tasks. This provides valuable exposure to client interactions and the opportunity to learn from experienced solicitors. I find it very helpful to learn through observation.

5:00 pm – Wrapping up the Day

As the day comes to a close, I will complete some outstanding tasks, schedule all work to carry on tomorrow and clear my workspace for the next day. This may involve checking emails, responding to phone calls and updating client files and time recording.

In conclusion, a day in the life of a solicitor apprentice is a busy and challenging one. From researching legal matters to drafting legal documents and meeting with clients. Every task requires a high level of professionalism, attention to detail and commitment to learning. While the work can be demanding, it is also rewarding, as each day brings new opportunities to develop skills, gain experience and contribute to the success of the firm. Of course, not every day is like this but I hope it gives a rough idea of the kinds of tasks you could be involved in.
